I just installed Windows 7 64-bit on a Dell Precision M6300. There is a video problem.
Here's what happens and what I've tried: The problem: • If I move or resize a window, the colors go crazy and it becomes illegible or at best barely legible. What I've tried: • Installed the latest driver from the Dell support website, for Vista 64-bit. That made it a bit worse. With that driver, even before I resize a window, anything white in the window, such as the whole background for many windows, has a checkerboard pattern that makes the window difficult to read. So uninstalled that driver and I'm now back to the one installed by Windows 7 64-bit. • Disabled the display driver from Device Manager, and found that in the simple, low resolution video that Windows goes to when you do that, the prob lem did not occur. I was able to move and resize dialogs there with no problem.
• With the Windows 7 driver, I tried all the available video resolutions, including the lowest which I think is the same resolution used when the video driver is disabled. All had the same problem, including the lowest resolution. • Flashed the system bios from A3 to A13, the latest.
• Downloaded the latest Dell diagnostics, made a boot CD, went into custom and ran all the video tests. All reported no errors, and I never saw any problem with the video while in the diagnostics program. I was able to move the main window in the diagnostics program, and it worked fine; no problems of any kind there. • I also ran the Express diagnostics; it reported that all was well. What do I need to do to resolve this problem? Thanks, Greg. Update: I tried installing Windows Vista 32-bit on a different partition.
No problem at all; the video looks normal. That's with the driver installed by Vista; I didn't try driver downloaded from Dell. * * * Clearly this is a driver problem, not a hardware problem. * * * Now I'll try Windows 7 32-bit (new install, NOT upgrade over Vista). BTW, correction on my last post -- I'm not sure now that I recall seeing the problem before SP1 and the upgrades. The sequence went like this: -- During setup, I chose the option for automatic Windows Updates.
At the end of setup, it did a few updates. -- I installed SP1. -- I ran Windows Update, and it did a lot of updates, about 83MB worth. I'm pretty sure that I saw the problem before doing the last of the those three items. But I'm not sure now whether I first saw it before even the first round of updates, or before SP1. Okay, I have more information about the problem now. On all three Windows versions that I've tried -- Windows 7 64-bit, Vista 32-bit, and Windows 7 32-bit, I get the problem with the NVidia drivers, whether installed by Windows or downloaded from Dell, though the ones installed by Windows are not as bad as the ones downloaded from Dell, as described above.

In all cases, if I go into Device Manager and delete the NVidia driver, then go into Screen Resolution and change it to 1920 x 1200, all is well, and I'm using the 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter'. Of course, the video performance is not as good; I can see the difference just by moving a window around; this driver doesn't update the screen as frequently so the movement is choppy. To prevent Windows from automatically reinstalling the NVidia drivers on reboot, I have to specify that I want the NVidia driver to be removed when I uninstall it from Device Manager. Is there any hope for a fixed NVidia driver?
Any other suggestions? Am I missing something? Thanks, Greg. Hi Terry, No, I did not have success with the NVidia driver installed by Vista. I spoke too soon on that above; it turned out that after setup, it was still using the 'Standard VGA Grahics Adapter' until it rebooted; then it was using the NVidia driver installed by Vista and the problem was back.
The only driver that worked was Windows' 'Standard VGA Grahics Adapter' driver, which is slow. If I removed the NVidia driver from Device Manager, and checked the checkbox to uninstall it so that it wasn't automatically reapplied on reboot, the computer was usable, though slow, until the next automatica Windows Update, which would always install the NVidia driver again, and the problem would be back again. Here's how I resolved the problem: I resolved the problem by getting another Dell Precision M6300. This one has no problem with the NVidia driver installed by Windows 7 and Vista. I probably won't try the driver from Dell since it's about 3 years old, while the NVidia driver installed by Windows is only about 3 months old. I think it's clear now that there was a hardware problem with the first M6300.
